0density%2C%20and%20survivorship.%20Patch%20stability%20was%20evaluated%20with%20regard%20to%20the%20persistence%20of%20patches%20already%20well%20established%20in%201971-1972.%20The%20study%20sites%20offer%20a%20cross-shore%20transect%20through%20the%20central%20part%20of%20a%20large%20kelp%20forest%20at%20depths%20of%208%2C%2012%2C%2015%2C%2018%2C%20and%2021%20m%3B%20two%20additional%20sites%20at%20the%20north%20and%20south%20ends%20of%20the%20forest%20offer%20a%20longshore%20transect%20along%20the%2018-m%20contour.%20There%20were%20marked%20differences%20among%20the%20decades%20with%20regard%20to%20the%20intensity%20of%20the%20disturbances.%20Compared%20with%20the%201980s%2C%20the%20two%20preceding%20decades%20were%20relatively%20benign.%20The%201980s%20had%20two%20extreme%20disturbance%20events%3A%20the%201982-1984%20El%20Nino-Southern%20Oscillation%20%28ENSO%29%20was%20the%20most%20severe%20El%20Nino%20event%20in%20the%20last%20century%2C%20which%20included%20very%20warm%2C%20nutrient-depleted%20water%2C%20and%20a%20short%20but%20intense%20storm%20in%20January%201988%20appeared%20to%20have%20been%20the%20most%20severe%20in%20perhaps%20200%20yr.%20The%20storm%20changed%20age-specific%20kelp%20mortality%20patterns%20and%20caused%20the%20first%20large-scale%20understory%20mortality%20in%20several%20decades.%20By%20sweeping%20away%20drift%20algae%20it%20caused%20intense%20local%20urchin%20grazing.%20The%20storm%20was%20followed%20by%20a%20strong%20La%20Nina%20event%20marked%20by%20cool%2C%20nutrient-rich%20water%20in%201988-1989.%20Differences%20in%20kelp%20recruitment%20and%20survivorship%20in%20different%20areas%20of%20the%20kelp%20forest%20are%20influenced%20by%20gradients%20in%20longshore%20currents%2C%20temperature%2C%20light%2C%20wave%20energy%2C%20floc%2C%20planktonic%20propagules%2C%20and%20physical%20disturbance.%20The%20areas%20are%20characterized%20by%20different%20plant%20Population%20patterns%20and%20the%20effects%20of%20several%20species%20of%20herbivores.%20The%20massive%20disturbances%20of%20the%201980s%20obliterated%20much%20of%20the%20structure%20in%20the%20kelp%20forest.%20Certainly%20the%20disturbances%20caused%20many%20lag%20effects%20including%20outbreaks%20of%20understory%20algae%20such%20as%20Desmarestia%20ligulata%2C%20intraspecific%20competition%2C%20changes%20in%20grazing%20patterns%2C%20etc.%2C%20which%20in%20tum%20resulted%20in%20between-area%20variation%20in%20recovery%20rates.%20However%2C%20in%20all%20cases%20this%20variation%20was%20overshadowed%20by%20the%20overwhelming%20competitive%20dominance%20of%20Macrocystis%20pyrifera.%20Most%20of%20the%20understory%20patches%20on%20the%20transect%20lines%2C%20some%20of%20which%20had%20persisted%20for%207%20yr%2C%20died%20out%20by%20the%20end%20of%201990.%20The%20population%20biology%20of%20Macrocystis%20was%20remarkably%20similar%20in%20most%20areas%2C%20as%20the%20cohort%20longevity%20and%20survivorship%20curves%20were%20very%20similar%2C%20and%20the%20plant%20and%20stipe%20densities%20tended%20to%20level%20off%20in%20only%20a%20few%20years.%20Thus%20large-scale%20episodic%20events%20such%20as%20El%20Ninos%2C%20La%20Ninas%2C%20and%20rare%20storms%20exert%20dramatic%20impacts%2C%20but%20small-scale%20responses%20such%20as%20density-vague%20recruitment%20%28neither%20density%20dependent%20nor%20density%20independent%29%20and%20survival%20allow%20prompt%20recovery%2C%20often%20to%20preexisting%20patterns.%20The%20one%20exception%20was%20the%20southern%20site%2C%20which%20was%20marked%20by%20sea%20urchin%20grazing%20and%20poor%20kelp%20recruitment%20through%20the%20latter%20half%20of%20the%201980s%2C%20but%20a%20recent%20wa%20urchin%20disease%20event%20has%20led%20to%20kelp%20recruitment%20in%20fall%201991.%20A%20seeming%20paradox%20to%20the%20observed%20Macrocystis%20dominance%20is%20that%20in%20almost%20all%20areas%2C%20some%20understory%20patches%20of%20old%20plants%20have%20persisted%20through%20the%201980s.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Sep%201992%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22English%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.2307%5C%2F2937118%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%220012-9615%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22VMQ3KRIH%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-10-20T15%3A48%3A33Z%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22key%22%3A%22NTZNHPEJ%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A9129767%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22creatorSummary%22%3A%22Dayton%20et%20al.%22%2C%22parsedDate%22%3A%221989-08%22%2C%22numChildren%22%3A2%7D%2C%22bib%22%3A%22%3Cdiv%20class%3D%5C%22csl-bib-body%5C%22%20style%3D%5C%22line-height%3A%202%3B%20padding-left%3A%201em%3B%20text-indent%3A-1em%3B%5C%22%3E%5Cn%20%20%3Cdiv%20class%3D%5C%22csl-entry%5C%22%3EDayton%2C%20P.%20K.%2C%20Seymour%2C%20R.%20J.%2C%20%3Cstrong%3EParnell%3C%5C%2Fstrong%3E%2C%20P.%20E.%2C%20%26amp%3B%20Tegner%2C%20M.%20J.%20%281989%29.%20Unusual%20marine%20erosion%20in%20San%20Diego%20County%20from%20a%20single%20storm.%20%3Ci%3EEstuarine%20Coastal%20and%20Shelf%20Science%3C%5C%2Fi%3E%2C%20%3Ci%3E29%3C%5C%2Fi%3E%282%29%2C%20151%26%23x2013%3B160.%20
